Marinated beets with horseradish
Photo by Kirk McCoy for the LA Times
I used to hate beets because they tasted like dirt, in a bad way. Now I love beets because they taste like dirt, in a good way. You know, earthy.

Truffle hunting in France

It was a very chilly winter day, so cold that even the leaves on the spindly oak trees were shivering. But that's truffle season; January and February. And if you want to find truffles, they're not going to land in your lap while sitting at home by the fireplace. One needs to roam through the forests, where the trees have been stripped nearly bare by the icy winds...
Celebrated food writer and former Chez Panisse pastry chef David Lebovitz goes truffle hunting in the French countryside, then visits a truffle market and the Henras truffle company.

Iron crowns

What better way to make anything appear more dignified than by placing a crown on it? Encase a stack of books or encompass a pot of ivy. Its rustic appearance will add prestige to your royal gardens.
I think these would look a little silly in the garden (maybe my blood just isn't royal enough), but I could definitely find a place for them indoors.

Dear Rebecca Taylor: I'm willing to forgive the bowler hats and leopard prints in your Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection, but only because I loved these looks (sparkly tights!):

I don't like butterfly motifs as a rule. But I do like the idea of cut-out lampshades.

Suki belted coat
I have a serious problem with coats, which is -- I want to buy every single one that I see. I don't have this problem with other items; for example, the way some people do with shoes (and you know who you are). But jackets, trenches, dusters... trouble. Big time trouble.

Rosettes and bows are all over the place, but I wonder if this is a trend with staying power. My crystal ball says: no. Girly-girl is fun, but it can wear thin pretty quickly.

Hey there, East Coast
If I've learned one thing from Snowmageddon 2010, it's that I must invest in a better shovel. On the plus side: 10-day weekend!

John Robshaw block-print textiles
The next time I get the urge to buy $100+ throw pillows (and really, who hasn't been there?), I'm heading straight for John Robshaw's hand block-printed fabrics.
Pichwai moss decorative pillow: Pichhwai is a traditional art form that serves to narrate tales of Krishna. A small folk painting in this style, of a garden full of fountains and birds, caught my eye for its interesting native style. ($115)

BCBG Maz Azria Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear
I have a soft spot for BCBG Max Azria - probably because they make clothes that I can see myself wearing in everyday life. This is especially true of the Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection, which was designed specifically to cater to the recession-minded customer. And it doesn't hurt that the collection features lashings of gray - my favorite color, of course.

Mary-Kate beats the winter blues
Mary-Kate Olsen steps out in a red Lanvin coat. It could be gorgeous, but it looks like it's spent half its life crumpled on the floor. Also, this is a tall person's coat - probably not for someone who tops out at just over 5 feet. That said, I still love it.
Parachute duvet cover
I think I need to admit that gray is my favorite color. It's comforting and neutral without being boring beige.
So I love this cotton voile duvet cover from West Elm. Simple, but the ruching piques my interest.
